Even before social distancing, research suggests more than 60% of hiring managers used video job interviews to streamline their hiring process and engage with candidates faster.The video interview is even more common now and job seekers should expect to use technology when searching for a job. As the ongoing pandemic evolves, so does West Michigan Works! and their efforts to serve job seekers across West Michigan. To help job seekers get more comfortable with the interview process (whether it’s virtual or in-person), the agency is now using Wedge, an interactive, web-based video tool. 

Here’s how it works: Job seekers use a computer or mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone, to record a mock interview. They then get immediate feedback and tips on how to present their best selves to an employer or hiring manager.

“The one-on-one assistance from a career expert empowers and builds job seekers’ confidence,” said Angela Johnson, a West Michigan Works! training consultant.  

To prepare for a mock interview, job seekers should find an uncluttered, quiet space with proper lighting. Johnson suggests that job seekers treat the practice interviews just like the real thing.
