In a time when we can’t gather in groups or meet in-person, West Michigan Works! is still working to connect job seekers with employers who need talent now. They have just had to change the way they deliver their services.
This includes services for veterans.
Veterans Networking Job Club
One way West Michigan Works! continues to serve vets is through the Veterans Networking Job Club (VNJC). The monthly meeting connects veterans with local job opportunities and community organizations who provide veteran-specific services.
The VNJC takes place on the third Thursday of every month from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. The next event, on Thursday, June 18, is moving from an in-person gathering to an online opportunity to connect safely from home.
“West Michigan Works! has partnered with several veteran service providers to host this one-of-a-kind virtual networking opportunity,” said John Walker, business solutions representative at West Michigan Works!, who organizes the VNJC. “The event allows veterans to engage with hiring managers and gain valuable career assistance, referrals and connections.”
Participating veterans will hear from local employers with current job openings. They can also meet with fellow veterans and connect to community organizations, like Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS), for additional services and resources. View participating employers and register to attend at VNJC.org.
Veterans Priority of Service
In addition to the VNJC, veterans and their spouses may qualify for priority of service and other individualized employment services at West Michigan Works!. “Priority of service” means they can access services before or in place of non-veterans.
They can also connect with veterans career advisors and/or veterans representatives who work directly with vets to:
- Help identify military skills.
- Create and update resumes to reflect skills that transfer to civilian job opportunities.
- Connect them to veteran-specific community resources.
