As demand for advanced manufacturing talent continues to grow, Discover Manufacturing, an industry talent council of West Michigan Works!, awarded $11,500 in scholarships to 10 individuals preparing for or advancing careers in the field. The awards, presented at a May 21 ceremony, are part of a broader effort to strengthen the region’s workforce and meet the evolving needs of advanced manufacturing.

That need is especially evident in West Michigan, where, according to The Right Place, the advanced manufacturing sector experienced a job growth rate of 11% from 2013 to 2023, more than double the national rate of 5%.

Statewide, manufacturing contributes 19% of Michigan’s economic output and employs 14% of the workforce. In response, Discover Manufacturing is investing in the next generation of skilled professionals by supporting education and strengthening the region’s talent pipeline.

“Discover Manufacturing scholarships help students pursuing higher education and seeking advanced skills,” said Kacey Regan, director of workforce development, DeWys Manufacturing; and member of the West Michigan Works! Discover Manufacturing Industry Talent Council. “West Michigan Works! and Discover Manufacturing are committed to building a strong manufacturing talent pipeline to serve our region today and prepare us for tomorrow’s opportunities. These scholarships reflect our belief that investing in people is the most effective way to ensure the long-term success of West Michigan’s manufacturing sector.”

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 were awarded to support students pursuing manufacturing-related education in Michigan. Eligible recipients included graduating high school seniors, adults, and apprentices enrolled in skilled trades training or continuing education programs at post-secondary institutions across the state.
