Applications opened April 6 for the Ascend Summer Youth Career Readiness program, offering young people across West Michigan the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience, develop job skills and earn a paycheck. The six-week Career Readiness program, hosted by West Michigan Works!, provides summer employment combined with online training to prepare participants for long-term career success. Applications close May 8 with the program running June 22 through August 7.
Participants, ages 16 to 24, will work up to 20 hours per week while earning $15 per hour, based on attendance and completion of required online activities. The program also includes virtual career-readiness training focused on career exploration, workplace problem-solving, and soft skills development. Participants without internet or technology access will receive support to complete the required training.
West Michigan Works! partners with local employers to place participants in roles that best fits their skills and aspirations.
In 2025, the program placed 92 young people with 40 employers across Allegan, Barry, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon and Ottawa counties. For some participants, the experience provides a critical entry point into the workforce.
Owen, a participant from Gowen, said he struggled to find employment due to limited work experience before joining the program. Through the Ascend Summer Youth Career Readiness program, he was placed at WGLM Radio in Greenville, where he gained hands-on experience in media, sales and community engagement, an opportunity he said he likely would not have had otherwise.
Describing himself as more introverted, Owen said the experience helped him come out of his shell and build confidence communicating with others. He contributed to on-air segments, supported sales and promotions and engaged with the local community, developing both technical and interpersonal skills.
“The summer program is great and I would recommend it to any kids who might be struggling to find a summer job or who don’t have a lot of work skills or experience,” Owen said.
During the program, Owen became more comfortable working with others and applying feedback, including practicing sales pitches and participating in live radio segments. At the conclusion of the program, he was offered a part-time position with the station.
“Experiences like Owen’s highlight the value of early workforce exposure and the importance of connecting youth with employers who are willing to invest in their development,” said Chad Patton, Director of Development & Innovation, West Michigan Works!. “These opportunities not only build skills and confidence, but also help create stronger talent pipelines for employers across our region.”
