Tips to Stay Mentally Healthy While Unemployed

Losing a job is one of the most stressful things that can happen to someone. In fact, it is ranked among the top 10 most stressful life events.

Job loss can affect your mental health and brings many emotions including sadness, fear, anxiety, anger and embarrassment. When you add the anxiety and uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it can feel overwhelming. These feelings are normal. There is no right way to feel when faced with a job loss during a pandemic and no timeline for feeling better. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help boost your mood when you’re feeling stuck in a low spot.

Tips to Reduce Stress, Anxiety and Depression

Make a schedule. Try to settle into a routine. Don’t stay up too late and set your alarm as if you were going to work. Schedule time for physical activity, relaxation and of course, working to find a new job.

Take a breakBut not for too long! A short break will leave you feeling rested and ready to start your job search.

Get up and move. Physical activity is a great way to reduce stress and avoid depression. Take a walk, go for a hike (don’t forget your mask and to maintain appropriate social distance) or try an online yoga class.

Connect with your networkEveryone is feeling isolated right now. Make time to connect with friends and family using technology like FaceTime or Zoom or make an old-fashioned phone call. Speaking with people you love can really boost your mental health. You can also let them know you are looking for a new job and ask if they have any ideas.
