Make a Great First Impression at In-Person Job Fairs

It’s no secret that employers are hiring right now. And this means in-person job fairs are popping up all over. Hiring events are great opportunities to get in front of a hiring manager and make a lasting impression. If it’s been a while since you’ve met an employer in person, here are some tips to help you put your best foot forward!

Know what COVID precautions the host is taking. Are the hosts requiring masks? Do you need to provide proof of vaccination? Is the event being held outdoors? The answers to these questions will affect how you prepare – and being prepared can help calm your nerves.

Know who’s hiring and the positions they have open. Do your research ahead of time. Learn more about the company’s values by checking out their website and social media. Research their open positions to make sure your skills align with what they are looking for.

Bring multiple copies of your resume. Make sure your resume is up-to-date, and if possible, tailor it to the employer’s open positions. Handing a hiring manager your resume shows them you took the time to prepare and are serious about the potential job.

Prepare an elevator speech. An elevator speech is a short overview of your skills, experience and what you’re looking for in a job. Write a few sentences down ahead of time and practice saying it out loud before you go. When it’s time to introduce yourself, you will feel confident and the “speech” will sound natural.

Dress for the occasion. Dress like you would for a job interview. Even if you are stopping by the job fair in the middle of running errands, be sure to look professional.

In-person hiring events are your chance to make a great first impression. Hiring managers can tell when you’ve taken the time to prepare. And a little preparation can go a long way in opening the door to a new job.
