Muskegon CNA graduates

West Michigan Works! and its program partner, Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI), graduated two classes of Certified Nurse Aids (CNAs) this May. In ceremonies in Muskegon and Grand Rapids, 13 individuals were pinned and are now ready to begin their health care careers. Seven of these individuals have already secured full-time positions!

More than a job

As I watched the women receive their pins and certificates, I imagined the many lives they’ll touch. I’m newly aware of the critical role that CNAs play after an accident left my mother in need of 24/7 care last winter. My siblings and I gladly shared the role of Mom’s caretaker for the first few months, but were relieved to find a trained professional who could manage the demanding physical tasks with not only confidence, but with genuine care and concern. Jenny has quickly become a trusted and much-loved member of my parents’ household.

Many CNAs will move on to other positions within the industry, but I am grateful for those individuals who make this their life’s work. While it may be “just an entry-level position,” there are few things more important than providing basic care and comfort for those who cannot help themselves. I hold these professionals in high esteem.

Congratulations and thank you! to Madre Bolden, Dominique Bothwell, Jamaya Bozman, Dasia Chaney, Nikita Dannah, Morgan Jamerson, Felicia Lockett, Katelynn Miles, Mercedes Robertson, Santana Sanders, Shae Schuler, Shanee McSwain, and Lakysha Triplett. I hope you find a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose in your work, no matter where your career journey leads you.

About the program

The Certified Nurse Aide curriculum, developed by MCTI, was created for people whose academic skills are below the 8th grade level. With simple accommodations and restructured curriculum, the 10-12 week program gives students with learning disabilities the opportunity to have promising careers. The additional instruction time, custom curriculum and testing accommodations set students up for success. Read more>
